I was born in Ibitiuva – SP. I graduated with a BSc in Statistics from the Federal University of São Carlos in 1984. I then joined a collaborative team of statisticians at the Brazilian Air Force – Rio de Janeiro, working as an applied statistician on a number of military projects. From Rio I moved to the Federal University of São João Del Rei to take up a post as Lecturer in Statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (1988-1994) and Department of Biomedical Engineering (1994-2006). In September 2006, I moved to the Federal University of Lavras, Department of Exact Sciences to take up a post as Associate Professor in Mathematics and Statistics. I obtained my MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1993), and my PhD in Probability and Statistics from the University of Sheffield (1997). I worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Neuroscience Statistics Research Laboratory, at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (2003-2004).  I am fellow of the following scientific societies: Brazilian Statistical Association, Royal Statistical Society and International Biometric Society – Brazilian Region.







My main research interests lie in the practical application of statistics to a range of fields such as public health, materials and agricultural science. I usually undertake the interface between statistics and those fields within the framework of classical statistics. Nowadays, I have broadened my horizons to work within the Bayesian approach. Recent researches include the development of a state-space algorithm for estimating neuron firing rates; application of regression models for estimating intensity of use of health technologies in neonate intensive care units and the development of methods for assessing spatial clustering in particulate composite material. In the last two years, I have extended many spatial statistical methods to solve problems related to agricultural sciences such as assessing spatial distribution of coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera Coffeella) in coffee plantations.
